SharePoint and Apple, Living in Harmony? SharePlus App Rises to the Top in our iPad App Tests

​Over the past months, an overwhelming number of “SharePoint for iPad” apps have surfaced. Before we knew it, our clients were asking us to include recommendations on mobile access to their intranets, and we needed to give these apps a test run. I used QuickOffice HDPro as my office app for editing documents, which is the editing suite of choice for most apps out there.

Like other software selection, the best app depends on what your exact requirements are. If you simply want your users to mirror content on their iPads and browse it while they are offline, players like Colligo Briefcase and Aircreek Filamente will fill that need. In reviewing those tools, they meet basic offline browsing requirements, favorites, and emailing links from SharePoint very well.

But let’s take it one step further – how about when you really need to check out a document, make changes and check it back in? Only one elegantly handled this very real user scenario, and it was the full version of SharePlus Pro from Infragistics. From their app, I can:

Browse to a document, edit the properties, and then check the document out.

By tapping to open, I can then “Edit in QuickOffice HD Pro” and make changes as needed. And here’s the best part – once I’m done editing the document, I can click “SAVE BACK” from inside of QuickOffice – none of the other apps offered this integrated feature.

This saves the changes, then gives you the option to open the properties back up in SharePlus, where you can commit the changes and check the doc back in.

A few more clicks than a desktop experience, but the SharePlus/QuickOffice handoffs are easy and the SharePlus interface guides you through the process. If you want to experience the full power of SharePoint on the iPad, definitely give SharePlus a look for this critical SharePoint functionality. This key feature won me over for sure! Senior Solution Architect, Julie Muccillo, to Speak at Chicago SharePoint Users Group Meeting

Julie Muccillo, Senior Solution Architect at SusQtech, is presenting at the Chicago SharePoint Users Group Meeting Thursday, May 10th on “SharePoint Goes Public: Website Built on SharePoint 2010”.  In the session, Julie will demonstrate why some of the world’s top websites are built on the SharePoint 2010 platform.  She will also discuss additional tools which make SharePoint even better on the Web.

Julie has been working with SharePoint since 2002 designing intranets, extranets and public facing websites.  Julie has presented at several SharePoint conferences including SharePoint Conference .ORG and SharePoint Dev Connections.

SharePoint Academy Welcomes Their First America's Hero

Hero.jpgSharePoint Academy from SusQtech welcomed their first participant of the SharePoint for America’s Heroes Project March 12-23, 2012 in their SharePoint 2010 Immersion Training course.  The America’s Hero, Rhett Moeller, is the first veteran to take advantage of the Project that offers veterans the opportunity to enroll in any SharePoint Academy training course free of charge.  “I really enjoyed the course and the mixture of lessons and hands-on labs,” Rhett said.  “The instructor was very experienced and used real-world examples.”  Rhett believes many veterans can benefit from the Project and learning SharePoint.  “SharePoint is becoming more widely used in the workplace and is a very popular platform,” Rhett explained.

Tips & Tricks: Opening PDF's in a Browser

​Have you ever tried to open a PDF in a SharePoint site and you are presented with a box that asks you if you want to open as “Read Only” or “Check Out and Edit”?  In some scenarios the option is even more limited when the only option is to save the item locally and then open it.  Out of the Box when you install SharePoint this is the way the user experience is configured.  This is a configuration that is set at the web application level.    To modify this behavior you can open central administration and go to the web application general settings area and change the setting under browser file handling to “permissive”.  This is a very small detail that can enhance the user experience.  It is intuitive to click through the prompts, but the experience is much more smooth when the document immediately opens.  While we are discussing PDF’s it is also a good time to mention the PDF iFilter.  Installing this on your SharePoint server will present the PDF icon to visual identify them and enhance the search experience for users.

SP Tech Con San Francisco Session: Stop Those Prying Eyes Getting to Your Data

​Liam Cleary, SharePoint MVP and Solution Architect at SusQtech, will be speaking at SP Tech Con San Francisco on Tuesday, February 28th at 11:00 am PST on “Stop Those Prying Eyes Getting to Your Data.”  Liam will be discussing the methods that can be used to secure not only access to SharePoint sites, but also securing content from people who should not be seeing it.

SusQtech is exhibiting at the event which runs February 28-29th in San Francisco, California.  At SusQtech’s booth (#405) Pete Serzo, SharePoint Architect, will be signing his book “SharePoint Administration Cookbook” between 5:00-7:00 pm PST on Tuesday and between 12:00-1:00 pm PST on Wednesday.  The first three people to visit the booth during those times and say “I Want the SharePoint Recipe” will receive a signed book!

More Veterans Seeking Technology Jobs

​An article recently published on payscale.com, “Veterans Move into Technology Jobs”, claims that more veterans are seeking technology jobs following active duty.  The article states that more than 220,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are currently seeking work and the number of veterans moving to technology jobs is increasing.  Some of the top technology jobs listed in the article include Program Manager, IT Consultant, Systems Engineer, Network Engineer and Technology Writer.  Microsoft is named as being the employer most accepting of the challenge.

Here at SusQtech, we appreciate the challenge that many veterans face in finding employment post duty.  And because more and more veterans are seeking technology jobs, we decided this was an area where we could help.  Our SharePoint for America’s Heroes Project allows veterans returning from active duty the chance to take any of our SharePoint Academy training courses free of charge.  No matter the skill level, SharePoint Academy can provide any eligible veteran with the SharePoint knowledge they need.

Documents & Record Management in SharePoint...Really?

Top Ten Questions to Ask When Looking for Training.

Not all SharePoint training classes are created equal. We've compiled a 'Top Ten List' of questions to ensure you know what your getting the next time you sign-up for SharePoint Training.

  1. ​Are your trainers SharePoint Consultants or just trainers?
    SharePoint is an extremely broad and powerful platform with a lot of capabilities and it is important the your SharePoint trainer has experience implementing SharePoint and can provide 'real world' examples of how to use SharePoint during the class.
  2. What curriculum do you use?
    It is important to understand if the training vendor is utilizing a third party curriculum or one that they have developed. Ask to see a course outline.
  3. How often is your curriculum updated?
    Whether the vendor is using their own curriculum or that of a third party it is important to know that the class materials will be improved based on student feedback and changes Microsoft makes to the SharePoint Platform.
  4. Can you guarantee I will be satisfied with the training I receive?
    A SharePoint training class represents a significant investment of both time and money on your part. What happens in the event that you are not satisfied?
  5. How much of the class is hands on?
    The best way to learn any aspect of SharePoint, whether you are business users, designer, developer architect or SharePoint Administrator is by using SharePoint. Be wary of classes with that don't provide much in the way of hands-on exposure to SharePoint.
  6. Will I receive my own SharePoint environment to use for the duration of the class?
    Part of the learning experience is the technology and tools that are used for the class. This is particularly important for the labs. Find out if you will be sharing an environment or have your own.
  7. Do you offer special pricing for (i.e. Multi Student Discounts, Government Discounts, etc.)?
    Many training companies offer multi-student discounts, promotions and special pricing for government employees. Be sure to ask to ensure you get the best pricing possible.
  8. Is your website running SharePoint?
    Pretty simple but if an organization says they 'know SharePoint' and are prepared to teach it to you  and aren't running it themselves is a good indicator that they aren’t true 'SharePoint Experts'.
  9. Do you measure attendee satisfaction?
    Find out how the vendors measures student satisfaction and more importantly do they make continual improvements to their class curriculum (see #3 above), class technology and overall educational experience.
  10. Do you limit how many students can attend the class?
    Just like in college or any educational environment a smaller class size (no more than 20) is important to the educational process. It ensures you will get the individual attention from the instructor that you need.

SusQtech’s Community & Content Strategist, Maggie Swearingen, Talks User Adoption on Microsoft’s GetThePoint Blog

Maggie Swearingen, Community and Content Strategist here at SusQtech, was recently published in Microsoft’s well-known GetThePoint Blog with the post titled, “The site is built but no one comes: How SharePoint site collection administrators can boost user adoption” on January 17th.  The post explains what site collection administrators can do for successful user adoption.  “User adoption is never easy and rarely happens overnight,” Maggie writes, and encourages organizations to think about end-users first when it comes to creating successful user adoption plans.  Maggie also suggests that site collection administrators invite end-users to the project kick-off, define governance plans early in the process and develop a successful training plan.  To read the entire blog post, click here.
